Using winthrop.edu, mytjnow.com and heraldonline.com, create a series of web briefs with headlines, italicized blurbs and a two-sentence lead-in with a link to the full story. Write your own headlines, blurbs and leads. Do at least five of these. (Hint: headlines and blurbs are not complete sentences; your two-sentence lead-in should include an embedded link.) Include at least one photo. See if you can embed a video as well.

Example:

Community service, vigil to highlight activities for slain leader

A candlelight vigil to honor civil rights leader Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. will be held Monday  at Winthrop University's community concourse. The 7 p.m. vigil is one of several activities being planned for student participation to celebrate King's life.

Gingrich uses Rock Hill appearance to blast Romney
Presidential contender decries 'crony capitalism'

Republican presidential candidate Newt Gingrich turned up his criticism of rival Mitt Romney, calling the former Massachusetts governor a weak opponent for President Obama. Gingrich also told a crowd at Rock Hill's Magnolia Room that the South Carolina Republican presidential primary is the most important in modern politics.

For class today

Today you'll need to set up a blog for this class. (If you already have a blog and don't mind using it, that's fine, but you might consider starting a new blog to highlight your multimedia work.)

You'll also set up a twitter account, if you don't already have one. Then tweet me @guyreel the url of your blog so I can link to it. Use the hashtag #MCOM226 and tell me who you are in your tweet. Sample tweet:

@guyreel follow my blog #MCOM226 jondoe.blogspot.com -- from John Doe

MCOM 226:

In this class you will  begin to produce and tell stories using various media platforms. As a foundation for this, I want you to begin by evaluating and writing print stories for the web. For Wednesday: Visit at least three news sites and examine how they present various stories -- look for photos, slideshows, audio, video, maps, graphics and print. Find an example of each kind and write a one-page report identifying the sites you visited, along with a critique of each kind of element I have named above. For example, you might note that the Charlotte Observer ran a map of a crime scene; describe the map and how effective it was. Do the same for different stories using different multimedia elements.
